Watch out for triangular Numbers at the bottom of plastic bottle

Watch out for triangular Numbers at the bottom of plastic bottles

Avoid number 3, 6 and 7
These plastics pose health risks and should be avoided. Heating them or keeping them in refrigerator is harmful.
·         #3 (PVC): Causes liver cancer. Have negative effects on the liver, kidney, spleen, bone formation and body weight.
·         #6 (Polystyrene): toxic to the brain and nervous system. It also has been found to affect red blood cells, liver, kidneys and stomach in animal studies. It is hard to recycle.
·         #7 plastic is usually polycarbonate and contains BPA (Bisphenol A). Avoid it altogether. It affects nervous system. It was found to stimulate prostate cancer, produce ovarian dysfunction; genetic damage, etc. (Purchase Baby Bottles free of BPA).

Safe but not for repeated use:
·         #1 (PET or PETE) plastic is the kind used for bottled water bottles, which are generally regarded as safe. But don’t use it repeatedly. A recent study found traces of DEHP in bottled water stored in a PET bottle for more than 9 months.
Safe:
·         #2 (HDPE), 4 (LDPE) and 5 (polypropylene) plastics are generally regarded as safe. Best is 2 and 4. 5 also leach out some chemicals

Do not reuse mineral water bottles:

  1. Don't drink tea/coffee in plastic cups. It is coated with wax. Glass cups are better.
  2. Avoid storing food in plastic containers. At least store in good plastic as low grade plastics degrade the nutrients in food.
  3. Instead of using plastic water filters, use ever silver ones. Or store water in mud pots.
  4. Avoid storing non vegetarian foods in plastic containers as chemicals migrate easily to the foods.
