Watch out for triangular Numbers at the bottom of plastic bottles
Avoid
number 3, 6 and 7
These plastics pose health
risks and should be avoided. Heating them or keeping them in refrigerator
is harmful.

(PVC): Causes liver
cancer. Have negative effects on the liver, kidney, spleen, bone formation and
body weight.

#6 (Polystyrene): toxic
to the brain and nervous system. It also has been found to affect red blood cells,
liver, kidneys and stomach in animal studies. It is hard to recycle.

#7 plastic is usually polycarbonate and
contains BPA (Bisphenol A). Avoid it
altogether. It affects nervous system. It was found to stimulate prostate
cancer, produce ovarian dysfunction; genetic damage, etc. (Purchase Baby Bottles free of BPA).
Safe
but not for repeated use:

(PET or PETE) plastic is the
kind used for bottled water bottles, which are generally regarded as safe. But don’t use it repeatedly. A recent
study found traces of DEHP in bottled water stored in a PET bottle for more
than 9 months.

(HDPE), 4 (LDPE) and 5 (polypropylene) plastics are generally regarded as safe. Best is 2 and 4. 5 also
leach out some chemicals
Do not reuse mineral water bottles:
- Don't drink tea/coffee in plastic cups. It is coated with wax. Glass cups are better.
- Avoid storing food in plastic containers. At least store in good plastic as low grade plastics degrade the nutrients in food.
- Instead of using plastic water filters, use ever silver ones. Or store water in mud pots.
- Avoid storing non vegetarian foods in plastic containers as chemicals migrate easily to the foods.
